The Plzen ZOO was at first established in the Doudlevka Quarter near the Radbuza River in 1926. In 1963 it moved to its current location in Lochotín where it merged with a botanical garden in 1981. The varied natural zone of the Plzeň ZOO has an area of 21 hectares and since 1996 has been transformed into a zoo-geographical bio-park. It is worth mentioning that 70% of species kept in the ZOO are not to be found in any other ZOO in the Czech Republic or Slovakia. Many animals are not kept in cages but in pens in which you can admire for example, chimpanzees, lar gibbons, lion-tailed macaques or ring-tailed lemurs. Interesting is also the Asian part of the ZOO and the Akva-Tera pavilion in the center of Plzen where you can see invertebrates, fish, amphibians and reptiles. A specialty of the ZOO is also a farm called Lüftnerka containing a collection of domestic animals and 400 exhibits of agricultural tools. The lovers of plants can enjoy a greenhouse with succulents from South Africa, Madagascar, and Canary Islands or the Asian garden with rare and endangered species of woody plants. Kids will love the Dinosaur park.

It is quite well known that the current zoological and botanical gardens (ZOO and BZ) in Lochotín not is the first facility of its kind. In their origin and current location capitalizes on the ideas of several naturalists geners. There where lakes with swans and other birds in the vrubozobými area (today Tyl Theatre). This "Menagerie" was completed and had a house with monkeys. Thanks to the national West Division Museum there are preserved some of the images. Their dating falls to the 19th century. Also traveling menagerie, sometimes stopping in the city, brought Plzen such animals that were not yet permanently shown, such as tigers, zebras, or even an elephant. Neither was the visit of the Bosnian bear an exception. Zoo Doudlevce history, formation and activities of the association IRIS and the first decade of the zoo business deals basically only collection of articles in "Stories of animal life" IRIS Zoo, written in 1936 to 10th anniversary of Mr. Vaclav Zoo took hold, Bernie secretary and treasurer of the league. Other attractions kept the league executive Bert Baslerová. It was part of the correspondence, clippings, and minutes of meetings. These archives are stored in the Archive of the city of Pilsen. Basis Pilsen Zoological Garden was laid on 2 September 1926, when the IRIS Association membership meeting it was decided to hire a greenhouse at the military lake in Pilsen Doudlevce, set up a fish tank from it strated the zoo that way. In Czechoslovakia there was only one single German zoo established by nature lovers in Liberec (1919), the Prague zoo is open to the IRIS 1931.Samotný association was behind the 1926 quarter-century of existence and its origins can be traced back to the 1899. From 1926 until 1953, when the club ceased to exist, its activity is increasingly concentrated on ensuring the operation of zoological gardens. On the construction work was provided by the Department of the league today, an incredible 705 CZK. The greenhouse with its surroundings was obtained free of charge for twenty years. Even after three months of the decision establishing the gardens, then in December 1926, the opening up of greenhouses and aquariums and three aviaries with birds of prey, foxes and jackals. Entrance to the garden was free at first. In 1927 the garden spread of deer fence and two monkeys named Sörla and Minda (Java macaques). At the same time the administration of the military lake prohibits keeping foxes and jackals, due to odor. The first manager was Lokajicek A. (1926-1932) and later A. Pavlik (1932 - 1953). Administrator name is still listed for Mr. Oleskiewiče the beginning of the procedure Zoo Uniform National Committee (JNV). During PKO (Park of Culture and Leisure) had a garden of his head. They were J. Hajek, Z. Vesely, I. Hašková-Svobodova and Z. fur. About the director can talk to the delimitation of the CCA. P. Vlcek, A. Jester, F. Brewer and J. Travnicek held the office where directors of the botanical garden (POI) to 1981 . In 1930 the league was denounced by debts and threatened to close the garden. In 1932, again for the first time encountered the limitations of space and the impossibility of further expansion of the garden and next year is already looking for the garden to move. The economic crisis hit in 1934 the Czechoslovak Republic, hence the garden. The animals were alive during the summer largely from what they got from the visitors. In winter, when almost no one was the garden, the animals where fed by moldy old bread. The garden, however, survived this second serious crisis. Since the end of establishing a entrance fee to access to the garden. The amount was CZK 1 for adults, 50 halls. for soldiers and students. In 1935 there is a reconstruction of the aviary, for otters a swimming pool and a cage for rodents, thereby completely filling the space constractually. Increasingly, therefore, is considering the relocation of the garden and are already looking for a specific location. It also speaks of the need for thousands of members, in order to sufficiently cover the cost of running the garden. The zoo survived the Second World War, albeit with considerable organizational, administrative and existential difficulties, particularly in the last years of the war, when they were again great difficulties in supply. At the beginning of the war has even been some development of the garden, which is associated with below-mentioned change in species composition, size and slightly increased marketing and attendance. Better times came immediately after the liberation (visitors where soldiers), the following winter everything changed again and the animals suffered. Even after the year 1946 was a small attendance, in the spring caused considerable flood damage. In 1947, the league gradually normalize the activities, financial problems remain. The 18th February 1950, is again talk of a crisis situation - no money for winter operation or the purchase of feed for animals. You can no longer freely buy and sell only through the Prague zoological garden or central authorities. How to develop animal husbandry? For example, in early 1940s, the gardens very first lion, wolf and bear arrives. Until then, were the largest animals, red deer and fallow deer. Little is known fact that the Zoo at that time was briefly in private hands. Not only during the war, the association IRIS turns very often in his correspondence to different banks, associations, organizations and patrons with requests for donations or subsidies for the maintenance, material and animal food. The main trading partner and supplier game is Zoo in Prague, circuses, private owners of animals and gardens in Germany. Probably most unique animal is a Malaysian Bear (1942). In the early 1950s begins the tradition of meeting the emerging and constituent Czech zoological gardens. For each session (eg 1951), the administrator Pavlik returns always praised for the appearance of gardens, with recommendations to amend the Statute and the allusions to the miniature size. Gradually getting everyone, including members and leading the league IRIS clear that federal management of the zoo is an anachronism and the situation is unsustainable. Therefore agreed to transfer the National Committee of the City of Pilsen. The whole process was accelerated, however, and used within the opposition alliance and beyond and pass the Zoo on September 1, 1953 under the guidance of manager Oleskiewice liquidation after the general meeting the association under the wing of the Unified National Committee. The association developed the business 52 years. The tradition continued to the early 90s club friends ZOO Plzeň, IRIS uses the title of the current magazine about nature and the same zoo and civic associations seeking to promote the garden. At the same time in the tradition of breeding activity continues the initial association of Pilsen family aquarium. On June 15, 1957 Josef Hajek joins the garden management. In late 1958 and 1959 originated in Pilsen, Prague Chamber Orchestra, which focused a number of disparate cultural organizations, incl. Zoo. The first large animals appear such as the camel, llama, wildebeest, zebu, saiga, nilgai and cougar. In February 1958, prepared for the city of Pilsen "Investment for the construction task zoological and botanical gardens in Pilsen" Prague Zoo, specifically Dr. Purkyně and Ing. Turk (whose advisory was even more of the Zoo). Finally, the Board approves this task NV April 21, 1961. Construction costs are estimated at CZK 18 million, purchase of animals and the planting of 2 800 000 CZK. Counts with 62 employees and 19 ZOO EP (yet to December 31, 1974 is only 34 and 9), with an area of 21 ha and the number of animals 1940 speciements. Botanical garden has 3 greenhouses - Tropical (for utility and ornamental plants), subtropical (type of plant lemon, fig, tea ..) and cold (succulents, etc.). The zoo should include the pavilion of beasts, monkeys, water birds, small mammals, terrarium, aquarium. Furthermore, including 15 large paddocks, 8 large aviaries, 39 small aviarys or 3 walled pools. Of animals proposed by Dr. Purkyne permanent breeding has appeared only a few - hippo, Indian elephant, a few sea lions, wolverines, etc.. Interesting however, is that eventually in the Zoo was already mentioned fruit bats, curassow. Planed (but never came) was also among other things, jackass penguin, bearded vulture, bustards, black caiman, etc.. In some conflicting data sources are circulating on the date of anthrax infection, which after many years of arguing about how to move this transfer catalyzed gardens. With DVM. Max and his contribution to the Annual Report of the zoo in 1981 is unquestionable that the infection was first demonstrated by American bombs 08.09.1961. It is known that most of the cats had succumbed to the old zoo. Thus in 1962 the garden was closed and only in 1963, it opened a temporary site at the zoo lacation. In the zoo this year were the first paddocks for ungulates, carnivores, canid enclosures, aviaries, monkey pavilion and tropical bird house, pheasant, mountain lions and a large aviary. In October 1963 welcomed the opening of West Bohemia daily news paper for the zoo a new article, "When we have a giraffe." The first day after opening, after almost two years without a zoo, there where 6600 visitors. At the same time in this period, a permanent exhibition of aquarium-vivarium (in a former shop) in the center of the city, now called simply AKVA-TERA. At the location they started from scratch - with only 29 species. Zoo construction site was a long time and many temporarities served for many years. Building development was initially fast (through a brigade), then everything was difficult. For example, a tight bear enclosure served until 1998. In the 1970s came paddocks for antelope, a backup greenhouses, huts, small aviary of birds of prey, and an African enclosure. the last beast pavilion served since 1978. At the end of the 1960s Mr. Zdenek Vesely (onset February 1, 1969) is leading the zoo. In July 1970 as the focus of the zoo can include: Breeding ungulates, water birds and an aquarium, terrarium was opened. The sea lions pool is considered to ne built many times, most recently in the management of Mr. Vlcek in the 1980s. Already at the time CCA penetration were even drawn plans for a detached part of the zoo with 2-3 species of pinnipeds, cetaceans, sharks and large reptiles to a distance of about 1 km from the site into a neighborhood park with meadows. Already in 1973, mentions the idea of delimitation (independence) from the zoo and leisure park culture, but not recommended. Head of the garden is at the time of Ivan Svobodová-Hašková. From 1.1. 1981, ZOO and BZ also thanks to the support Dvur Kralove Zoo Director Ing. Josef Vagner separate institutions and leading function is marked with one director. It happens by Ing. Petr Vlcek. At this time the objects are so torn. that it requires construction of new infrastructure. It is actually created - especially the new asphalt surface and reconstructed roads and extension of utilities. Since 1983 works at the zoo and BZ continuously its current Director Jiri Travnicek, first in the capacity of botany. Zoo is part of the exhibition, stands first in the area of 3 ha, but for its development has acquired 21 ha area, which has been used almost without rest (2005). The fundamental direction for the future gives in particular the completion of the General Plan in 1996, after the approval of the garden there have been many positive changes toward a zoogeographical Biopark. Between 2003 and 2004 already come more than 300 000 visitors. By now 400 000 people.
